Short Biography

My research interests lie within the area of migration and I currently concentrate specifically upon discourses and representations within the Irish and European contexts. I am the author of the book “Political and Media Discourses of Illegal Immigration in Ireland” (2015), and I have also published a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals. In my career, I have undertaken a number of research and teaching roles, and I am currently an Associated Staff member with the Department of Geography, Maynooth University, Ireland.

I completed my PhD in 2012 with the Department of Geography, Maynooth University. This research focused upon discursive representations of illegal/undocumented immigrants in the Irish Parliament and newsprint media through a Critical Discourse Analysis approach. I also hold a BA honours degrees in Geography and Archaeology from University College Dublin. In 2006, I completed a MA in Geography in University College Dublin, for which I received first class honors. Through a “Children’s Geographies” framework, my MA research examined the immigration of “separated children” and “undocumented minors” to Ireland.

I have taught Geography in Maynooth University, University College Dublin, and St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra. I have a keen interest in teaching and learning, and I am a qualified University of Cambridge English as a Foreign Language teacher and hold a Professional Certificate in Teaching and Learning.

I am an Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of English Linguistics. I have also acted as a peer-reviewer for a number of Journals (i.e. Social and Cultural Geography, Current Sociology, GeoPolitics, Irish Geography, Latino Studies, Journal of Language and Politics, Environment and Planning ASage, GeoJournal, and De Gruyter Open Book Publishers). I am a member of the Geographical Society of Ireland, the Association of American Geographers, and an external member of the Power, Discourse and Society Research Cluster at the University of Limerick.
